I've
always had a strange fascination with death, but also a strong desire
to give new life to discarded animals and objects. When I moved from the
High Desert of Southern California to the redwoods of Northern
California I began to encounter large amounts of animal casualties on
the streets and highways. I started to take a closer look at the
animals, some of which I'd never seen up close before. Their last poses
were grotesque yet beautiful. I knew these animals would remain in the
streets, repeatedly being run over until someone came to scrape them up
and throw them away. My fascination evolved from photographing these
animals to eventually taking them home with me, much to the dismay of
room mates and friends. It was on my dining room table one day that I
decided to start preserving these animals and giving them new life, one
that would make them immortal.
What started as an odd hobby has
become my work. I now create nontraditional taxidermy mounts, dioramas,
jewelry, and hair accessories with the animals I find. Believing animals
should not be killed for the purpose of taxidermy, I exclusively work
with roadkill and other animals that would otherwise be thrown out.
Now halfway between life and death, they're all a little Half Embalmed.
